Gabrielle Brady is a UK/Australian filmmaker who for the past ten years has lived between the Australian central desert, Mongolia, Indonesia, Cuba, Mexico and Europe. Gabrielle makes cinematic documentary films that, working in creative collaboration with film participants. Gabrielle is currently based in Berlin.
Gabrielle’s award- winning debut feature film ISLAND OF THE HUNGRY GHOSTS (2019) (http://www.christmasislandfilm.com/) is currently being shown in international film festivals and has a theatrical release in the US, UK, Germany and Australia. The film has won over 30 awards including; Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film festival, Byens-Chagoll Award at Visions du Réel, Best documentary film Adelaide film festival, Best documentary at Crested Butte film festival, Best Documentary film at Valetta film festival and a jury special mention at the Edinburgh film festival. Gabrielle won the best direction award at the Australian independent film awards 2019. The film is currently shortlisted for the German Film Proze (2020) and has been nominated for a German Film Critics prize.
Gabrielle’s short film THE ISLAND was launched via the Guardian Documentary program and premiered at the Sheffield film festival 2017. The film won best short film at the Ânûû-rû âboro festival in New Caledonia and at the Fiji film festival. Gabrielle has given masterclasses and workshops including ‘performance in documentary,’ ‘working collaboratively with participants’ and ‘introduction to hybrid cinema,’ at universities in Australia and Europe (including the Australian documentary conference, RMIT Melbourne and the Edinburgh documentary film institute). Gabrielle studied Documentary Direction for three years at the International Film school in Cuba (EICTV) where she made several short films (BROKEN PANTS, MILAGRO, FALL). More recently Gabrielle has been invited to attend various international workshops including Berlinale Talent Campus, Berlinale Doc Station, Feature Expanded and Phillip Hoffman process cinema workshop.
