Description of piece:
Three silver "Long boats" Hoi money (measure 5 inches x .5 inch) from the Kingdom of Lan Chang in Laos/Thailand circa 14- 15 century along with a silver ingot "Sycee" coin (measure 2.5 inches x 1.5 inches) or "saddle money" made from pure silver with Chinese character from the 14 century. Both Hoi money from the Lanchang Kingdom and the Sycee coin are at least 500 years old and are considered to be museum type artifacts and impossible to find otherwise.
Hoi money combined silver and bronze and was shaped into bar-shaped ingots. Resembling a Chala boat, its front surface was bumpy and displayed an elephant, flowers, or a naga; the reverse side was plain. Denominations varied according to size; its value was based on the silver’s weight and purity. Hoi Money, Tiger tongue, money or market money in silver were all prevailing currencies of the period. This money might carry two or more marks stamped on its concave surface, but usually three. The constant marks stamped on the Hoi money were elephants and the Chakra, but sometimes with one more marks of lotus, bunches of flowers or Dok Pikul etc.
Lan Xang, also spelled Lan Chang, Laotian kingdom that flourished from the 14th century until it was split into two separate kingdoms, Vien Chang and Luang Prabang, in the 18th century. Conflict with its Myanmar (Burmese) and Thai (Siamese) neighbours forced the kingdom’s rulers to transfer the capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane (1563), but the kingdom maintained its power and was at the height of its glory when the Dutch merchant Gerrit van Wusthof visited Vientiane in 1641.
