Alexandra Von Furstenberg is a modern furniture designer and President of AVF, LLC. She attended the Parsons School of Design and Brown University, where she studied costume design and art history. Over her ten-year career at DVF, Von Furstenberg served as Creative Director and later, Director of Image. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2006, Alexandra focused on designing exclusively for the home. A synthesis of art, home furnishings and fashion, her collection consists of signed, limited edition pieces made out of acrylic. The collection is available at Alexandra Von Furstenberg, a West Hollywood boutique she owns and operates.
“My idea for this design was to see how I could transform the original Swan chair into an interpretation of what I do. The Alexandra Von Furstenberg brand is an acrylic based furniture and accessories house. My inspiration was melted taffy, how could I melt plastic on top of the swan chair to look either like draping, melting or molding...et voila a chair in armored plastic. The brand is best know for its neon colors so what better way to support Breast Cancer then by using our pink neon acrylic. On the backrest of the chair is the lip logo in pink sealing it with a kiss ; ) and a white painted leg to stream line the whole look. It was a joy to participate in such a wonderful cause, Thank you."

“For the 2011 Pink Swan Project to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, we exotically embellished Arne Jacobsen’s iconic piece. The exterior of the chair is layered in hard brass paillettes, and the seat is lined in a soft plush pile fabric. Feathered trim follows the sinuous line between the outer shell and interior seat, an elegant nod to the chair’s avian form. The finishes embrace a modern, unexpected and resilient feminine spirit."

Swan Chair Designed by Holly Fulton for Swarovski
Swan Chair Designed by Holly Fulton
Dimensions:
- 29.1” w 26.8” d 30.3” h 15.8” seat height
- 18” base diameter
Scottish-born Holly Fulton is an emerging fashion designer whose work is flooding the pages of British style magazines and blogs. A graduate of London’s prestigious Royal College of Art, Fulton began her career working on womenswear and accessories for Lanvin. Shortly thereafter she decided to launch her own line, which combines bold, hand-drawn graphic prints with her signature jewelry and embellishments using Swarovski crystal, exotic skins and metal. Drawing from an eclectic mix of sources, Fulton’s work references her love of Pop Art, Art Deco and color. Fulton won the Young Designer of the Year Award at the Scottish Fashion Awards in both 2009 and 2010. She won the Swarovski Award for emerging talent in accessories at the British Fashion Awards in 2009 and the ELLE Award for Best New Designer in 2010.
“Upon receiving the Swan chair, I was struck by the combination of simple elegance and modernity it embodied. I wanted to create a design to complement and enhance the existing features whilst conveying my signature style and representing the graphic style of the Holly Fulton label. Given that the chair has quite a curvilinear design, I wanted to create a motif that was straight as a foil to this and create a central spine of crystal to run up the front and back of the piece, with interlocking colours and shapes emanating from this. Inspired by a diverse range of influences such as Art Deco and the work of Eduardo Paolozzi, the key idea for this came from Paolozzis Wittgenstein in New York with its eclectic mix of references and lines of solid block colour encircling pop art images and also from NASA images of space craft around this time. The colour palette of black filtering through grey to a variety of blues is taken from early Pucci prints as a nod to the chairs 1960s heritage.
Above all I wanted to create a strong yet fun visual which complements the iconic design of Arne Jacobsen and reflects the strength and breadth of the project and its commitment to a highly relevant cause. I would like to thank Swarovski for inviting me to be part of this project. I have never had the opportunity to work with crystal onto anything other than garments so it is exciting as a designer to see this realized. And I would like to take the opportunity to wish all involved the very best with the project and hope the Pink Swan Project is pleased with my design!”

“The Swan chair is a perfect mix of organic modernism and pop art and my goal in this design was to address both of those qualities by making a poppy allusion to the female form.”
"Ready to take flight as the moon rises, the black swan inspired me with her nocturnal elegance. I embellished the shapely curves of Jacobsen’s Swan chair with a spray of black feathers set against the tailored chic of its grey fabric. This Black Swan is classically chic."

"My inspiration for this year's swan chair was the expression of hope. It seems to me, the purpose of research is the pursuit of the cure. This is embodied in the concept of hope. My chair is a simple allegory. The fluid lines of the original design taking winged flight. I think this is what hope is. The quest to overcome what at times seems impossible.

The inspiration for my Swan chair was an attempt to honor those affected by breast cancer, by expressing their vitality and spirit through design. Pink is optimistic, energetic, fulgent, engaging, and a moxie to the masculine world that dominates our built landscape. I know that if I can do one small thing to contribute towards the cure then I can feel proud.”

“The Swan chair is one of my favorite Mid-Century designs. With its undulating curves and comfortable deep swivel seat, it embodies the ideal of form and function. For this project, I have created a pink and white striped Ikat fabric. I love the harmonic interplay between the bold geometry of the fabric with the chairs sexy organic form. Also, to make the chair more unique, I have added an antique Suzani fragment from my personal collection. I am proud to be part of the design community’s fight against breast cancer.”

Audition with Nancy Meyers, Writer and Director of What Women Want and It's Complicated, for Her Next Hit Movie!
Calling all aspiring actors! Win the incredible opportunity to audition for Nancy Meyers' next movie in LA.
A pioneer who first broke with convention by co-scripting "Private Benjamin" (1980), a rare comedy centered on female characters, Nancy Meyers spent nearly two decades sharing writing and producing credit on successful big screen comedies before breaking out on her own as one of Hollywood's top women filmmakers. During her rise, Meyers collaborated with then-husband Charles Shyer on comedy hits including "Baby Boom" (1987) and "Father of the Bride" (1991), but following her directorial debut with "The Parent Trap" (1998), she established a unique voice with hugely popular romantic comedies aimed at oft-overlooked middle-aged moviegoers. In films "What Women Want" (2000), "Something's Got to Give" (2003) and "It's Complicated" (2009), Meyers painted a new portrait of the modern, romantic comedy heroine as a mature, self-sufficient, class act who is perfectly capable of "having it all."

“I am flattered to be asked to design this chair for such an amazing cause. As I have many friends in the fashion world who have been afflicted by breast cancer, I thought it would be appropriate to collaborate with a friend in fashion.
The fabric I selected comes from the collection of Barbara Tfank, who has dressed the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama, the singer Adele, Angelina Jolie and many other prominent females.
I was drawn to the fabric because it reminded me of a happy floral bouquet. I wanted my chair to exude femininity. I could see this chair in a woman's boudoir, bedroom, or soft colored room. Because breast cancer most greatly affects women, I wanted to create a piece that appeals to every woman's girlish side.”
Fabric by Barbara Tfank. Upholstery by Genesis Upholstery
The chairs will be on view at SUITE New York during the month of October for interested bidders to view in person.

We treated the Swan chair as though it was going in our own home by making it feel chic, yet comfortable and well-assembled.”
