New York Post: Star Gifts
Snagging these plum presents may have been impossible a few years ago but now, thanks to Coppy Holzman, CEO of CharityBuzz.com, they can be a click away -- and you can do a good deed for a charity with the same gift.
Noting that the reces sion has taken a 30 percent bite out of charitable contributions, Holzman is pairing celebrities, their pet causes and their fans on the online auction site that has folks looking for the just-right gift bidding for the special prize.
Last week, for example, the bidding on the Martha Stewart gig was at $4,500 -- with the proceeds going to the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Bidding on a chance to meet Alec Baldwin on the set of "30 Rock" had reached $9,000. Proceeds will go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Holzman launched the site as a pet project for comedian Chevy Chase back in 2005. But it quickly morphed into a full-blown business complete with 12 full-time staffers. Holzman takes an undisclosed piece of the winning bid.
A few weeks ago, golf great Tiger Woods attracted $300,000 for a putting lesson -- a record for the site. But this was before the scandal broke about his tomcatting ways, leaving the donor worried that the deal might get nixed.
Holzman said he and the donor are taking a wait-and-see attitude -- the lesson had been scheduled for the spring.

Tibet House US is part of a worldwide network of Tibetan institutions committed to ensuring that the light of the Tibetan spirit never disappears from the face of this earth.

In 1991, Tibet House initiated The International Year of Tibet as a worldwide celebration of Tibetan culture, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Religion and Culture of the Tibetan Government in Exile in Dharamsala, India. This soon became a cascading international movement celebrated in over 36 countries with more than 7,000 different events and activities. Spike Lee Sends Brooklyn Kids Packing
Since 2002 the nonprofit has provided summer camp experiences for 1,500 young Brooklynites from primarily low-income housing. The annual scholarships allow kids to leave hectic and often high-risk urban environments to enjoy fresh air, fun and character building activities.
Lee is being recognized for his art, leadership and inspirational work, as well as his unwavering and continued support for his hometown. The nationally celebrated filmmaker's career has long benefited the community and its residents and secured Brooklyn's place on the Hollywood map. The organization will also recognize Denise Arbesu of Citibank for successfully blending business and community service.
Inspired by his own childhood experience, Borough President Marty Markowitz, started the initiative (made official in 2002) during his early days in the state Senate. "After my dad died when I was nine-years-old, someone in the same apartment building that we lived in was kind enough to work with my mom and convince her to send me to summer camp for about three or four years. And from that experience … I began a program to send young people to camp, as sort of my way to pay back those that made it possible for me to go to camp," said Markowitz.
The nonprofit works with certified, quality camps that agree to accept a more modest fee for the camper, which is then paid for by Camp Brooklyn. So while no actual camp exists by that name, all the beneficiaries hail from the city that needs no introduction. In tandem with public housing presidents, tenants associations and SCOPE, advocates for equal camp opportunities for all children, Camp Brooklyn selects 400 kids it believes would benefit from a summer camp experience.
Markowitz of course, would love to raise enough money to provide every underprivileged Brooklyn kid with the chance to escape summer in the city, particularly because the program is responsible for countless success stories with long-term benefits. "No matter how many kids we send away, there are kids that don’t get to go . All I can tell you is that the mothers tell me the kids come back more respectful and more responsible. And that’s the bottom line in this: more respectful and more responsible," explains Markowitz.
Support Camp Brooklyn by attending the award ceremony on Wednesday Dec. 9 at Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant in New York City. Tickets are $200 and all are welcome. If you can’t make it to the party, but still want in on a little auction action, visit Charitybuzz.com and win yourself a Bruce Springsteen-autographed acoustic guitar or a walk-on role in Spike Lee’s next film. And, with the holidays just around the corner, Markowitz suggests that if you have the funds ($500), send a kid to summer camp in their honor — a truly unique gift.
