Description

Take the trip of a lifetime and experience the Pacific Gray Whales in their last remaining pristine birthing grounds at Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California, Mexico!

Includes: A trip for TWO (2) to spend 4 days and nights in Laguna San Ignacio – an internationally recognized World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve in Baja Peninsula – to experience the Pacific Gray Whales, courtesy of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). (Late February/Early March 2011 dates TBD).

Unlike typical whale watching trips, which demand patience, wishing and waiting, experience an intense whale watching excursion. On this outing you’ll come into warm contact with the deep whooshing of breathing whales as they too share in the experience of gazing at mysterious visitors. The more curious whales are even known as "friendlies” – typically babies that either swim over to your boat on their own or are inexplicably pushed up and towards you by their mothers. Often, they’ll heave themselves out of the water right next to you!

Laguna San Ignacio is the only gray whale birthing ground left on Earth that has not been despoiled by human encroachment. Each winter, hundreds of pregnant gray whales swim 4,000 miles from the Arctic to reach this perfect lagoon nursery and give birth. Here, in the warm tranquil waters and placid surf, their one-ton newborns play with one another and hone their swimming skills for the arduous journey back to Alaska.

Although NRDC has launched a successful campaign to protect 120,000 acres of the lagoon, it is still threatened by the resurrection of salt works and oil and gas drilling. Piers have also been proposed. To fend off these new threats, NRDC and its partners are trying an innovative new approach – buying up the development rights to a million acres surrounding the lagoon and putting them in trust. Already, 120,000 acres have been secured. Your contribution to this event assists the Natural Resources Defense Council’s ongoing efforts to protect this vital territory.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY:

DAY 1
** Departure is scheduled for 7:00am (time subject to change) from the Holiday Inn in Old Town, San Diego. After a quick trip across the border to Tijuana, Mexico, you will take a private charter flight to the San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California, Mexico. Enjoy lunch and a short excursion of the inner lagoon area before boarding boats for the 20-minute ride to the island base camp where you will join the gray whales at their winter calving ground. Once at the base camp, you will have time to settle in, enjoy the first camp dinner and hopefully view a perfect lagoon sunset.

*** Because the departure is scheduled for very early on the morning of Day 1, trip participants must arrive in San Diego the evening prior to accommodate the trip’s departure time.

DAY 2 -4
Twenty-foot panga boats will await you each day to take you out among the whales, which are often just offshore. These Mexican fishing boats are about half the size of a full grown gray whale, and enable you to be at water level in order to have direct contact with the whales as they swim in these pristine waters. You’ll explore the vast lagoon ecosystems via walks on the shoreline, beaches and tide pools. You’ll be able to photograph the bird life, listen to experts discuss natural history or just sit back and absorb the incredible rhythms of the lagoon and its diverse wildlife.

DAY 5
After a hearty camp breakfast and a final farewell to the whales, you will board the boats and travel back to the inner lagoons. Enjoy lunch at a colorful lagoon-side restaurant before the midday charter flight to Tijuana. We will then transfer across the border by bus and return to the hotel in the early evening. If booking a flight out of San Diego this evening, please be sure flight departs after 7pm.

Before You Bid

Your bid is a contract

All bids placed on the charitybuzz® Auctions website are legally binding. If you are the successful bidder, you will enter into a legal contract to purchase the item and will be considered the buyer of the lot.

How to Bid

Steps to take before you place a bid:

  • If you haven't already, register for an account.
  • Browse the website for items of interest.
  • Once you have clicked into the lot description page, the "Place a Bid" box will appear on your right.
  • You must be logged into charitybuzz.com in order to bid. You will see the Current Bid and the Minimum Next Bid. To bid this amount, simply click the "Bid Now" button. A "Confirm Your Bid" box will appear confirming the Bid Price. If okay, hit Confirm. From here you can Return to Auction, check Your Active Lots, or Log-Out.
  • Due to the charitable nature of this auction, charitybuzz® has waived all buyer's premiums, commissions and fees.
  • If you have been Outbid, you have the opportunity to continue bidding. You will also be notified by email.
  • Overtime or "Popcorn" Bidding: Bids placed within 10 minutes prior to a lot's scheduled closing time will extend the closing time on that lot an additional 10 minutes. All lots will close when there have been no bids placed within the last remaining 10 minutes.

Bids are a binding contract. If you have any questions on any terms and conditions, we encourage you to email info@charitybuzz.com or call (212) 243-3900 and speak with one of our auction specialists before you place a bid.

Overtime Bid

Why did the auction closing time extend by 10 minutes after I placed my bid? This is called "Popcorn" Bidding: Bids placed within 10 minutes prior to a lot's scheduled closing time will extend the closing time on that lot an additional 10 minutes. This gives all bidders an opportunity to place a competing bid. All lots will close when there have been no bids placed within the last remaining 10 minutes.

Max Bid

Max bidding allows you to bid the maximum amount you wish to bid for an auction lot. Your maximum bid won't be displayed to other bidders, but will be displayed as the current bid based on the bidding increment. The following example illustrates max bidding:

  1. Auction Lot 1000 has a current bid of $0. The minimum bid is $250.
  2. Juan places and confirms a maximum bid of $500. Juan's bid is displayed as $250.
  3. Sally places a bid of $300 and is notified that the bid was not accepted because it did not exceed the maximum bid.
  4. Juan's next bid is automatically increased to the next bidding increment of $350.
  5. If no other bids are placed, Juan is the winner at $350.
  6. If Juan's $500 max bid is overtaken by another bidder, he will receive an outbid notice.

For further clarification please email info@charitybuzz.com with any questions.

liveBID

What does liveBID mean in the auction title and description?

In addition to an online auction, charities frequently conduct live galas and feature a live auction at the event. For the auction lots that are included in the online auction and the live auction, we note them with "liveBID" in the lot description, and we close the online bidding the day of the live auction. We contact the highest bidders on those liveBID lots by phone to see if the bidders want us to continue bidding on their behalf at the live auction.

In addition, a live gala may also include a silent auction. In these cases, charitybuzz bidders can bid online for silent auction items along with the guests at the event. These items remain open online until they close at the event. Winning bidders will be notified via email when credit card charges are processed. Please note that silent auction items do not support the Max Bid feature. The amount you bid will be registered as the next bid regardless of increment, so please bid carefully.

Please email info@charitybuzz.com with any questions.

ReserveBID

ReserveBID is a way for donors/charities to ensure that items do not sell below their value. Some items will start at a lower opening bid price to encourage bidding; however items that display "ReserveBID not met" below the current bid are not obligated to be sold to the highest bidder. Bidding must surpass the set reserve price in order to sell; therefore once "ReserveBID not met" disappears, the item is valid for sale at the current bid posted. Reserve prices are confidential and will not be revealed to bidders.
